Yadgir (or Yadgiri) which became the 30th district of the state is a historically relevant region. The district headquarters Yadgir was once known as Yetagiri, and was ruled by the Kalyana Chalukyas, Yadavas, Cholas, Bahmani Sultans, Adil Shahis and the Nizams. After the fall of the Badami Chalukyas, the Kalyana Chalukyas, known as their descendants, ruled the region. Tailapa II defeated the Rashtrakutas in 973 AD and established his kingdom at Melakheda (Sedam taluk)
